MPT Level 1 is a gateway into the marine industry! A chance to build skills and earn internationally accredited certifications, plus gain invaluable work experience with local BVI marine businesses.

 

During the first 10 weeks of the programme, you would be based at HLSCC’s Centre for Applied Marine Studies (CAMS) in Paraquita Bay participating in workshops covering basic swimming and sea safety, STCW, customer service, RYA Navigation and Seamanship, plus ABYC’s Fundamentals of Marine Service Technology: engines, boat systems, marine electrical, woodwork and composites. These workshops are full-time, and students are required to attend Monday to Friday 8.30am to 4.30pm.

 

For the second part of the programme, you will be putting the skills learnt into action during 8 weeks of apprenticeships with local BVI marine companies. This could include being a dock hand for a charter company, assisting a technician service/ repair an engine or even logging sea time working as apprentice deckhand.

  • HLSCC Certificate of Achievement: Marine Professional Training Level 1
  • Basic Safety Training STCW (Standards of Training, Certification and Watch-Keeping for Seafarers)
  • RYA Essential Navigation and Seamanship (Royal Yachting Association)
  • ASA101 Basic Keelboat Sailing (American Sailing Association)
  • Certificate of Service Excellent (Customer Service & Hospitality training)
  • Basic Water Safety and Swimming with BVI Lifeguards
  • ABYC Marine Service Technician

 

Graduates can qualify for possible careers and jobs as follow;

  • Deck Hand – Charter Yacht Steward, Flotilla Host or Engineer, Ferry/Excursion Boat Assistant;
  • Dock Hand – Marina or Fuel Dock Attendant, Yacht Cleaner and/or Briefer;
  • Boatyard Hand – Technical Assistant or Chandlery/Shop Assistant;
  • Port Hand – BVI Pilot Vessel/RVIPF Marine Division/HM Customs Vessel Assistant, BVI Ports Authority, Shipping Registry or Parks Trust Assistant.
