The H. Lavity Stoutt Community College Learning Resource Centre’s mission is to acquire, maintain and provide access to a well organized collection of books, periodicals, audiovisual and electronic materials in an effort to meet the learning, informational and research needs of students and to ensure their academic success and instructional, informational and research needs of Faculty and Staff.
The Learning Resource Centre continues to acquire high quality and accessible resources to meet the demands of our students, faculty and staff. We are delighted to announce that you can now gain access to thousands of electronic books through our website’s Ebsco Host database. Move at your own pace, in your own space…our resources will be waiting for you to explore.
We are currently in the process of expanding our audiovisual collection to include music of all genres from various countries. This new music collection will also feature a special collection of music by Virgin Islanders and/or about the Virgin Islands. If you would like donate music to our collection please contact us.
The Library at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College is one of a few authorized test centres in the Caribbean region for Kryterion, Pearson Vue and Prometric.
Check In/Out Resources
All registered students of the college are expected to register with the Learning Resource Centre in order to utilize their borrowing privileges. Upon registration, students are asked to fill out a membership card.
Rules and Regulations
Persons wishing to use the Learning Resource Centre should first and foremost adhere to the rules and regulations of the centre. Students are expected to observe the general library rule which is no LOUD TALKING… After constant warning, students will be asked to vacate the premise by the Campus Security. Upon entering the library, students are expected to use Lockers provided at entrance to store all person effects. No bags are allowed beyond that point. In addition, there is absolutely NO EATING in the library. Thus no food is allowed in the circulation and reference areas.
Use of cell phones is also prohibited in the Library. Students must have their phones on vibrate or silent at all times and must take each call OUTSIDE the Library.
Use of Reference publications/articles MUST only be used in the Resource Centre. Loans on these items are strictly prohibited.
Like the reference books, reserve books can only be borrowed for use in the library. This is a closed access area and the patrons are required to leave their ID cards when borrowing items.
Books from the open collection can be borrowed for a maximum of one week with option for renewal for one additional week.
Check Out Periods
Books in circulating collection may be checked out for seven days and may be renewed once for an additional seven days. Books need not be present to be renewed. Books with holds are not renewable. After the book has been renewed once and returned, the book must be allowed to stand on the shelf for a period of 24 hours. This allows other students the opportunity to check out the item.
Check Out Limits
Patrons may not have more than 2 items checked out at any one time. However, students have an unlimited amount that they can borrow from the reserve collection to be used within the resource centre.
HLSCC is the only venue in the British Virgin Islands which offers this service. Its availability means students and professionals could conveniently sit examinations and access other services which would otherwise only be obtained through travel abroad.
Test sponsors include Cisco, Comp TIA, GMAT (Graduate Management Admissions Test), Internal Auditing, Linux, Microsoft and Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork.
Through Kryterion and Pearson Vue, the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College delivers secure and confidential computer-based examinations for hundreds of worldwide organisations in the licensure, academic, regulatory, governmental, information technology and other professional industries.
